The play opened in New York in 1939,
and ran through 1947. With a total of 3,322
record-breaking performances on Broadway, it
remains the longest-running non-musical play in
American theatrical history. The work was further
distinguished with a highly-successful Warner Brothers'
film, released in 1947 while the play was still running in
New York, playing to full houses. As further testament to
the play's popularity, there were numerous touring companies
playing all across America when the movie opened. The film was
nominated for six Academy Awards, including those for it's stars,
William Powell and Irene Dunne; for best picture; and, for director,
Michael Curtiz. The play continues to be a favorite for professional
